Favourite place in England?

30 Jul 2010 at 22:57 Michael said ....

I spent a couple of days doing some model shoots in Portland Bill this week.  I have to say I just love it there.  It was so nice I even camped out in the car in the pub carpark one night.   Here are a few photos - http://blog.michaelpalmer.com/portland-bill-photographs/

Where else is worth visiting?  It has to have the right balance - nature - not too many people etc - a great view....

In my view, the viaduct between three peeks in Yorkshire or somewhere like Seven Sisters or one of the small ponds on top of one of the munrows in the Lakes.

I love Holy Island. Cut off by the tide twice each day, there is a sense of remoteness and security together.  For views, and  a sense of vastness I go up towards Stanhope and wander on the moors where the Northern Pennines taper into Northumberland.

Or Lizard Point, in Cornwall. Too busy in the summer, but still a great great place.

I'd say the Yorkshire Dales.

Remember spending one winters day (of many) wallking up there -superb.

Sadly a bit too far for me to get to at the mo.

My experience of the Farne Islands is not quite as good, went in puffin mating season and was not welcomed :) But the seals were great. penguin<< I know it's not a puffin, but close

Cornwall has to be my favourite in England. I try to get down there as much as possible. Looe, Fowey, and surrounding area. Lizard point quite stunning too, agree Paul.

Lizzard is nice.  So too is Devils Dyke just outside Brighton, but then again, so is Beer, near Les, and so too is Doncaster Fish Market.  I'm glad no one has mentioned London, although St James's Park is nice.

Fowey holds odd feelings for me - it is beautiful, but also the location of a life changing decision - it was where I got engaged.

My favourite place in all the world is Park Walk in Shaftesbury where I can sit on a bench and look out across Blackmore Vale.  Shaftesbury also has the infamous Gold Hill with a fab pub at the bottom called The Two Brewers.  Shaftesbury has a few good pubs and The John Peel Restaurant (affectionately known as The Whale's Gullet) which does the most amazing breakfasts for £4 including a mug of tea or coffee.  There are some great biking roads too including Zig Zag Hill which is on the way to Wimborne St Giles where the Earl of Shaftesbury lives.
