Nostalgia

26 Jul 2010 at 00:01 Karen said ....

Most of you young people won't remember this, but I was sitting working whilst everyone else was watching TV and a song came on an advert

Rose Royce .... Wishing on a Star

I was right back, as my 18 year old self at the school leaving party dancing with whoever was the latest crush at the time.

It was a lovely smile.

Does anything take you back instantly to another part of your life?

Songs always do it for me - there's always at least one song for every significant person or moment of my life, and as soon as I hear it, I always go back to that place; as recently as 3am this morning when a particular song came on the radio in a taxi on the way home that transported me back 10 years.

Quoting Danny ... Nostalgia isn't as good as it used to be.

IT TOOK THREE POSTS FOR THAT TO ARRIVE...

Just one of my memory songs is "Loving You" by Minnie Ripperton. I was sharing a house with two other guys when I was 19, and one of them tried to top himself by turning on the gas and blocking the doors and windows. He fell asleep in the lounge and the record he was playing to send himself off was an LP of current hits. One of the songs was "Loving You" and the record got stuck on that track and played it over and over.

I was asleep upstairs but the song wore it's way into my consciousness and woke me up. When I realised what he'd done, and that he might have taken me with him I dragged him into the garden and beat the living sh*t out of him.

"Loving You" - Minnie Ripperton.

great story Paul .... especially the bit that wasn't a mushy American ending when you beat the living wotsit out of him.

Although quite old but not as old as some - I do know all of those tunes in one version or another.

And I agree - Music always does it for me. Sometimes its also about the smell of something.

Memories are most vivid when they involve any of the senses for me!

I can't hear Jimmy Saville's voice at the end of a record without smelling Sunday Roast and remembering Sunday lunchtime when I lived at home

Oasis "don't go away" takes me instantly back to 1997. I just got back from the Reading festival was tired and needed a bath! but went to the shops first and bought a few CD's, one of them being Oasis.

I put the CD on whilst I was sorting out my stuff and finding dirt and empty crisp packets everywhere.

My then girlfriend (now my wife) had just flown to her parents for 3 weeks, we had been going out for about 7 weeks and I was in the "miss you" stage.. as soon as that song came on I stopped everything and just sat there listening to the lyrics. It was although they had been written just for that moment. As soon as the song finished I ran down the road to the local phone box (I didn't have a mobile in those days) and called her, we spoke for about an hour and it cost me a bloody fortune.

Whenever I hear the song now I go instantly back to those early days in our relationship....

Yes, I know, I'm wet.. leave me alone you bullies.

When I was working in Woolies we had albums of the week, this particular week was Best of the Drifters, album was playing away when I got a call to say my step brother had died (was expected), song was Like Sister and Brother and the song still makes me cry when I hear it now.

Mungo Jerry - In the Summertime - I only need to hear it and I am transported back to the day when I was taken for a spin in a blue mustang convertible with this record on the in-car record player (this car was owned by Jimmy Powell who was lead singer of Jimmy Powell & The Dimensions whom my parents managed).
