Danny P Joins Orange

10 Jun 2010 at 09:51 Paul said ....

I am pleased to be able to announce that Danny Peters, the 4N legend and Christmas Party attendee, has agreed to join the team at OrangeTree Development.

This is an exciting move for us, and a change of direction for Danny, and we are confident that this will work out well for both parties. OrangeTree Developments has grown considerably in the last few months. Combining a strong sense of fun with a very serious business approach, we are growing our range of products, and we believe that Danny will become a key part of that continued expansion.

This is an example of how surprising, and good things can happen, when you just talk to one another.

Keep networking!

As I understand it OTD have just purchased a white van and are in the process of spraying it a tangerine colour.

Danny will be tasked with driving around, handing out oranges with the company logo on.  He will be allowed to play air drums and keep a pet sheep in the van as long as they are in company colours.

I may have got it wrong and it could have been to walk around winking at young ladies.

Actually, my last bike was an orange CBF1000 and my current tiger would have been orange and looked like this if the dealer hadn't been doing a super offer on a blue one with about £2K of free hard luggage, heated grips, centre stand and other stuff that I wanted.

Terrible news. My former manager thinks I am making a mistake leaving Virgin Media. Apparently I have great potential. Given that his "management" is one of the things that failed to make this a hard decision for me, I was quietly amused. He did say nice things about my contributions to the company having been there from the early days though. Which was nice.

I thanked him for his thoughts and informed him that potential is a transferrable asset, also that I felt it would be far easier to realise it elsewhere. In an act of statesmanlike diplomacy, I wrapped the part where I alluded to him being an idiot in positive words and thanks.

It was interesting to me that his attitude made it clear that he assumed I was leaving because I didn't like my job. It never even occurred to him that I might be making this as a positive move, taking an opportunity that I consider to be a good one, as opposed to turning my back on VM because I have the hump about something. I find that other poeple's assumptions tell you a great deal about how they themselves think.

It got me thinking about other things too. I just don't have the political patience to get on in what is now a huge organisation. When I started in the cable industry, my part of it was a few hundred people looking after perhaps 100000 homes. I knew whoever I needed to get things done. Now it is a nationally joined up company, there are neccessarily big hoops to jump through and processes so abstract that I feel like I barely know how to get anything out of the ordinary done. As someone with a problem solving mind, it frustrates the hell out of me. Realising this has made me all the keener to get busy again with a small company.

for one moment there I thought you had changed your mind!  I am glad you haven't.

At Orangetree we have the opportunity to build an organisation the way we want it to be, which is really exciting and you will be a fundamental part of that, we all will be.  I expect very little in the way of politics, lots in the way of hard work and fun.  It is the way it has been so far.

The work we do is really absorbing.  It may not be as techy as that stuff you do at VM but at least it will be fun learning something new!

Probably more techy than most of the stuff I do. It sounds all very glam when I talk about lasers and DOCSIS3 and UBRs and whatnot, but the fact of the matter is that 90% lot of this particular layer of the 7 layer OSI model boils down to bashing and tightening things in pits full of mud. Well, ok, that's an exaggeration, but less than a quarter of it is interesting, involving stuff when you've been doing it for ten years plus.

And I'm not particularly knocking VM for its processess and procedures. It's a massive organisation now. They just can't have well meaning but hairy arsed vanmunkies like me making it up as I go along. I understand that, it would be chaos. Unfortunately that means that most of the time there is little point in me taking my brain out of its box. And that understanding has further reinforced to me that I'm making the right move to somewhere where I will be able to.

Sorry Karen, didn't mean to alarm you!

VM are ok - they don't like me very much though as I refuse to buy a larger tv package as I am still on the starter one that I had with telewest..they tempt me with the Nat Geo channel occasionally which I watch for a month and then refuse to upgrade so they take it away.

I admit that I don't understand this cable malarky - to me it either works or it doesnt.

VM are in many ways a good company, and it is good not to be leaving in bitterness. That is massively commendable.

But it is the enquiring mind, enthusiasm to learn that are the key skills that we believe we will gain from at OTD.

Taking on staff is, in my view, a responsibility. Even as an organisation grows, fulfilling the aspirations of the team should remain a key management objective, as far as is possible.

And, in the real world, people move on. You have to be a grown up about it in both directions.

It's true Paul, I have seen many people leave with a very negative attitude, what is on many levels a pretty good job. And quite often sheepishly admit later that they didn't realise how good until they had gone. I did take the freedom and opportunity to politely tell this guy about the hideous re-org errors I thought he made recently (yes I told him before it went wrong too), but I took pains to make it clear that despite that, my time with the various companies that have ended up as VM has been an overall very positive experience. (Telewest were my favourite, we were doing a brilliant job of turning the tide of opinion regarding cable companies until it was all change again). The OTD opportunity that I would have taken anyway,  just happens to have arrived shortly after being buggered about, that's all. I've been buggered about there numerous times in 14 years. You get used to it and crack on.

Bottom line is; there's no point leaving a bitter taste in people's mouths as you leave, and frankly, who's likely to listen to you if you're bitching and moaning on your way out anyway? Everyone go for a pint and smile and shake hands.
