Something changed

Just a bit of an observation.

This week there was some good news about the economy, real proper good news, bigger than expected growth and the most vibrant construction industry figures for years.  It appeared to be a bit of a byline.  The news was full of stories about which public sector budgets are going to be slashed.

I would like to think this is because managing the recovery is now the bigger issue and the perception is that we are 'in recovery'.  But I have a nagging feeling that actually we are all so conditioned to bad news the media works very hard to seek it out.

I think we should stop it now.  Let's talk up the positive. GOYA folk seem to me to be cheerfully pragmatic rather than doom mongers ... we should spread it around!

I went had drinks with a friend yesterday evening, had a beer on the beach and then played pool until 5am. During this time we talked about business the whole time. He has run his own companies since he was under 10 so has a lot to share. I am buzzing today and full of ideas so feeling very positive.  It is up to me to carry that forward.

I think that the media helped to drive the recession by continually talking about the forthcoming job losses so much so that people stopped spending resulting in businesses going under resulting in job losses. I am not saying that we could have continued with the amount of borrowing or poor lending descisions by the banks but it did seem that the media were rather gleeful in their reporting of the impending doom.

an observation I made was that the economy started to recover during the winter when the news switched from talking about the economy to talking about the snow.

I personally think the media snowballs everything and is always lagging behind what the politicans are covering up.

The government is re-introducing transparency - I just wonder what they're covering up in all that transparency

I find very little in the media that gets close to informed comment.

After a while, it just gets boring being defeatist!  This is the economy we have to deal with, and in it, we have to grow our businesses. Which is possible. So that is very positive.
